Of Hearts and Hands

Today I held the hand of a friend, as we ran from a beast.
Linked by something so fragile, so cautious.
Our hands and souls met for an instant, and I soared and sank at once.
Today I held the hand of a friend, as we ran from our shadows.
We fell together, but got up as one.
And I wondered if we would be parted once more.
Today I held the hand of a friend, as we ran from our walls,
Walls that had kept our hearts ashamed.
Strong and cruel as the experiences that had constructed them.
Today I held the hand of a friend, as we ran towards ourselves and each other,
And I knew,
Our hearts spoke through our  fingers as they met,
And they said,
"We are free at last.
