Or donc, c’était pendant la messe de minuit :
Tout flamboyait, l’autel, la nef et la tribune,
Celle-ci, par tous les soulards de la commune,
Devenue un enfer de désordre et de bruit.

Soudain, se retournant, d’un geste exaspéré
Soulevant à demi sa chasuble de fête,
Montant ses regards durs sur cette foule bête,
Tonitruesquement rugit le grand curé :

« Vous me connaissez bien, là-bas, les bons apôtres ?
Vous savez que je peux en prendre un parmi vous,
M’en servir de marteau pour cogner sur les autres !

Voulez-vous que j’y aille ! Assez de turbulence !
Hein !... hein !... Vous vous taisez, aussi lâches que fous ! »
— Et la messe reprit dans un profond silence.
