L'Horoscope

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)



Par un soleil mourant dans d’horribles syncopes,
             Mes spleens malsains
Évoquaient sur mon cas les divers horoscopes
             Des médecins.
Partout la solitude inquiétante, hostile,
             Où chaque trou
Avait un mauvais cri d’insecte, de reptile
             Et de hibou.
J’étais dans un chemin désert, tenant du gouffre
             Et du cachot,
Où l'orage imminent soufflait un vent de soufre
             Épais et chaud,
Dans un chemin bordé de gigantesques haies
             Qui faisaient peur,
Et de rocs mutilés qui se montraient leurs plaies
             Avec stupeur.
Et j’allais, consterné, songeant : « Mon mal empire ! »
             Tâtant mon pouls,
Et rongé par l’effroi, par cet effroi vampire
             Comme des poux ;
Quand soudain, se dressant dans la brume uniforme
             Devant mes pas,
Un long Monsieur coiffé d’un chapeau haut de forme
             Me dit tout bas
Ces mots qui s’accordaient avec la perfidie
             De son abord :
— « Prenez garde : car vous avez la maladie
             Dont je suis mort.
