Quand le chagrin, perfide et lâche remorqueur,
Me jette en ricanant son harpon qui s’allonge,
La Nuit m’ouvre ses bras pieux où je me plonge
Et mêle sa rosée aux larmes de mon cœur.

À son appel sorcier, l’espoir, lutin moqueur,
Agite autour de moi ses ailes de mensonge,
Et dans l’immensité de l’espace et du songe
Mes regrets vaporeux s’éparpillent en chœur.

Si j’évoque un son mort qui tourne et se balance,
Elle sait me chanter la valse du silence
Avec ses mille voix qui ne font pas de bruit ;

Et lorsque promenant ma tristesse moins brune,
Je souris par hasard et malgré moi, — la Nuit
Vole, pour me répondre, un sourire à la lune.
