Tombé, le vagabond qui rampe avec effort,
    S’arrête et gît, agonisant
      Dans de la boue,
      Et sur sa joue
    De grosses larmes vont glissant ;
Voilà ce qu’il marmotte avant sa triste mort :

« À jeun, des heur’, puis des heur’, pieds nus, j’ai marché
    Sous l’orage grondant des cieux
      Couleur de suie,
      Et sous la pluie,
    Et sous l’éclair brûlant mes yeux,
À travers les ajoncs, la ronce et le rocher.

Je n’peux pas plus app’ler que fair’ sign’ de ma main,
    Et voici que le soir étend
      Son drap fantôme
      Sus l’bois, sus l’chaume,
    Sus l’guéret, l’pacage et l’étang ;
I’ n’ya donc plus q’la mort qui pass’ra dans mon ch’min !

Je lutt’ cont’ le trépas, tel que l’jour à sa fin.
    Comm’ lui, je m’sens me consumer,
      Tremblant, livide.
      Mon bissac vide
    N’a pas de quoi me ranimer ! »
— Et la nuit, dans les trous, le pauvre est mort de faim.
