Le vieux qui, vert encore, approchait des cent ans,
      Me dit : « Malgré l’soin d’mes enfants
      Et les bontés d’mon voisinage,
J’suis seul, ayant perdu tous ceux qui s’raient d’mon âge.

Vous ? vot’ génération ? Ça s’balanc’ ! mais d’la mienne
      Ya plus q’moi qui rest’ dans l’pays.
Ceux que j’croyais qui f’raient des anciens m’ont trahi :
      I’ sont morts tout jeun’ à la peine.

Chaq’ maison qui n’boug pas, ell’ ! sous l’temps qui s’écoule,
M’rappelle un q’j’ai connu, laboureur ou berger,
À qui j’parl’ sans répons’, que je r’gard’ sans l’toucher ;
Au cimtièr’, j’les vois tous a la fois, comme un’ foule !

C’est pourquoi, quand j’y fais mon p’tit tour solitaire,
      Souvent, j’pense, où que j’pos’ le pied,
      Q’les morts sont là, tous à m’épier...

      Et j’m’imagine, des instants,
      Qu’i m’tir’ par les jamb’ ! mécontents
Que j’les ai pas encor rejoindus sous la terre.
