De grêles horizons noyés d’un brouillard bleu
Et plaquant tout autour leur bordure inégale
Sur un ciel moite et bas d’où pourtant rien ne pleut,
D’un nuageux funèbre où du gris s’intercale ;

Là-bas, très loin, partout, sous les buissons givrés,
Si chenus que le vent ne pourrait plus les tondre,
Par morceaux, d’un blanc sale, aux lisières des prés,
Des neiges s’obstinant à ne pas vouloir fondre ;

Bordé d’arbrisseaux morts dont le tronc noir blêmit
Un marais sur lequel pas un jonc ne frémit
Et qui, pétrifié, vitreusement serpente :

Tel le site où, tout seul, juste à la nuit tombante,
Un grand héron pensif promène son horreur,
Fantôme de la faim comme de la maigreur.
