Ruminant au logis tout un passé funèbre
Où des ferments aigris de haine et de remord
Joignaient leur goût de fiel à des saveurs de mort,
J'entrais dans cette horreur où l'esprit s'enténèbre.
Quel qu'il fût, l'être humain, rien qu'avec sa présence
M'évoquant tant de mal que j'ai souffert par lui,
M'aurait envenimé. Contre un si noir ennui
Ma révolte grinçait de son insuffisance.
A la fin, je m'enfuis, je courus les vallées :
La paix de la lumière et de l'ombre mêlées
Noyait troupeau, feuillage, aux creux, sur les penchants ;
Et, guéri comme par un magique dictame,
Je compris, ce jour-là, que le calme des champs
Ramène à leur néant les chimères de l'âme.
