Le Bohême

Toujours la longue faim me suit comme un recors ;
La ruelle sinistre est mon seul habitacle ;
Et depuis si longtemps que je traîne mes cors,
J’accroche le malheur et je bute à l’obstacle.

Paris m’étale en vain sa houle et ses décors :
Je vais sourd à tout bruit, aveugle à tout spectacle ;
Et mon âme croupit au fond de mon vieux corps
Dont la pâle vermine a fait son réceptacle.

Fantôme grelottant sous mes haillons pourris,
Épave de l’épave et débris du débris,
J’épouvante les chiens par mon aspect funeste !

Je suis hideux, moulu, racorni, déjeté !
Mais je ricane encore en songeant qu’il me reste
Mon orgueil infini comme l’éternité.
