Le Bœuf

L’œil injecté de sang, le mufle dans l’eau sale,
Un bœuf, à moitié mort de soif et de chaleur,
Penchait sur le trottoir sa tête colossale
Devant un boucher ivre et sourd à sa douleur.

A la fin, il tomba pesamment sur les pierres,
Et, fracassé, vomit dans sa bave trois dents,
Au milieu des lazzis de hideuses tripières
Voyant en lui déjà des intestins pendants.

Affairés et flâneurs, hommes, enfants et femmes,
Heurtant le pauvre bœuf de leurs rires infâmes,
Absorbaient le peu d’air qu’il tâchait de humer ;

Et dans un café sombre, oblong comme une bière,
Ceux qui fument pour boire et boivent pour fumer
Le regardaient mourir en dégustant leur bière.
