À la longue, je suis devenu bien morose :
Mon rêve s’est éteint, mon rire s’est usé.
Amour et Gloire ont fui comme un parfum de rose ;
Rien ne fascine plus mon cœur désabusé.

Il me reste pourtant un ange de chlorose,
Enfant pâle qui veille et cherche à m’apaiser ;
Sorte de lys humain que la tristesse arrose
Et qui suspend son âme aux ailes du baiser.

Religieux fantôme aux charmes narcotiques !
Un fluide câlin sort de ses doigts mystiques ;
Le rythme de son pas est plein de nonchaloir.

La pitié de son geste émeut ma solitude ;
À toute heure, sa voix infiltreuse d’espoir
Chuchote un mot tranquille à mon inquiétude.
