Voix de surnaturelle amante ventriloque
Qui toujours me pénètre en voulant m’effleurer ;
Timbre mouillé qui charme autant qu’il interloque,
Son bizarre d’un triste à vous faire pleurer ;
Voix de surnaturelle amante ventriloque !

Dit par elle, mon nom devient une musique :
C’est comme un tendre appel fait par un séraphin
Qui m’aimerait d’amour et qui serait phtisique.
Ô voix dont mon oreille intérieure a faim !

Très basse par instants, mais jamais enrouée ;
Venant de dessous terre ou bien de l’horizon,
Et quelquefois perçante à faire une trouée
Dans le mur de la plus implacable prison ;
Très basse par instants, mais jamais enrouée ;

Oh ! comme elle obéit à l’âme qui la guide !
Sourde, molle, éclatante et rauque, tour à tour ;
Elle emprunte au ruisseau son murmure liquide
Quand elle veut parler la langue de l’amour :

Et puis elle a des sons de métal et de verre :
Elle est violoncelle, alto, harpe, hautbois ;
Elle semble sortir, fatidique ou sévère,
D’une bouche de marbre ou d’un gosier de bois

Tu n’as jamais été l’instrument du mensonge ;
Ô la reine des voix, tu ne m’as jamais nui ;
Câline escarpolette où se berce le songe,
Philtre mélodieux dont s’abreuve l’ennui,

Et tes chuchotements les plus mystérieux
Sont d’invisibles doigts qui chatouillent mes fibres ;
