La Putréfaction

Au fond de cette fosse moite
D’un perpétuel suintement,
Que se passe-t-il dans la boîte,
Six mois après l’enterrement ?

Verrait-on encor ses dentelles ?
L’œil a-t-il déserté son creux ?
Les chairs mortes ressemblent-elles
À de grands ulcères chancreux ?

La hanche est-elle violâtre
Avec des fleurs de vert-de-gris,
Couleurs que la Mort idolâtre,
Quand elle peint ses corps pourris ?

Pendant qu’un pied se décompose,
L’autre sèche-t-il, blanc, hideux,
Ou l’horrible métamorphose
S’opère-t-elle pour les deux ?

Le sapin servant d’ossuaire
Se moisit-il sous les gazons ?
Le cadavre dans son suaire
A-t-il enfin tous ses poisons ?

Sous le drap que mangent et rouillent
L'humidité froide et le pus,
Les innombrables vers qui grouillent
Sont-ils affamés ou repus ?

Que devient donc tout ce qui tombe
Dans le gouffre ouvert nuit et jour ?
— Ainsi, j’interrogeais la tombe
D’une fille morte d’amour.

Et la tombe que les sceptiques
Rayent toujours de l’avenir,
Me jeta ces mots dramatiques
Qui vivront dans mon souvenir :

« Les seins mignons dont tu raffoles,
« Questionneur inquiétant,
« Et les belles lèvres si folles,
« Les lèvres qui baisèrent tant,

« Toutes ces fleurs roses et blanches
« Sont les premières à pourrir
« Dans la prison des quatre planches,
« Que nulle main ne peut ouvrir.

« Mais, quant à l’âme, revit-elle ?
« Avec son calme ou ses remords,
« Faut-il crier qu’elle est mortelle
« Ou qu’elle plane sur les morts ?

« Je ne sais ! Mais apprends que l’ombre
« Que l’homme souffre en pourrissant :
« Le cadavre est un muet sombre,
« Qui ne dit pas ce qu’il ressent !
