La Morte

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)

Miné de chagrin, l’homme croule
Près du lit à baldaquin bleu
Où sa femme gît au milieu
Sous le drap tendu qui la moule.

Voilà que son doux orphelin
Monte sur une chaise, et câlin,
Passe ses mains d’étrange sorte
Sur la figure de la morte.

Le père tressaille — il a peur...
Et, défigé de sa stupeur
Devant la forme longue et roide,

« Que fais-tu, p’tit ? » et tristement,
L’enfant répond : « J’réchauff’ maman.
Si tu savais ? elle est si froide !
