Le mystère infini de la beauté mauvaise
S’exhale en tapinois de ce portrait sorcier
Dont les yeux scrutateurs sont plus froids que l’acier,
Plus doux que le velours et plus chauds que la braise.

C’est le mal ténébreux, le mal que rien n’apaise ;
C’est le vampire humain savant et carnassier
Qui fascine les cœurs pour les supplicier
Et qui laisse un poison sur la bouche qu’il baise.

Cet infernal portrait m’a frappé de stupeur ;
Et depuis, à travers ma fièvre ou ma torpeur,
Je sens poindre au plus creux de ma pensée intime

Le sourire indécis de la femme-serpent :
Et toujours mon regard y flotte et s’y suspend
Comme un brouillard peureux au-dessus d’un abîme.
