La Dame en cire

Je regardais tourner le mannequin,
Et j’admirais sa taille, sa poitrine,
Ses cheveux d’or et son minois taquin,
Lorsque j’ai vu palpiter sa narine
Et son cou mince à forme vipérine.
— « Elle vit donc ! » me dis-je, épouvanté  :
Et depuis lors, à toute heure hanté
Par un amour que rien ne peut occire,
J’ai la peur et la curiosité
De voir entrer chez moi la dame en cire.

Par tous les temps, sous un ciel africain,
Et sous la nue inquiète ou chagrine,
Comme un nageur que poursuit un requin,
Sans pouvoir fuir je reste à sa vitrine,
Et là j’entends mon cœur qui tambourine.
J’ai beau me dire : « Horreur ! Insanité ! »
Il est des nuits d’affreuse obscurité,
— Tant je l’évoque et tant je la désire !
Où je conçois la possibilité
De voir entrer chez moi la dame en cire !

Telle qu’elle est en robe de nankin,
Avec ses yeux couleur d’aigue-marine
Et son sourire attirant et coquin,
La pivoteuse à bouche purpurine
Dans mon cerveau s’installe et se burine
Je m’hallucine avec avidité,
Et je m’enfonce, ivre d’étrangeté,
Dans un brouillard que ma raison déchire,
Car c’est mon rêve ardemment souhaité
De voir entrer chez moi la dame en cire.

ENVOI

Ô toi qui m’as si souvent visité,
Satan ! vieux roi de la perversité,
Fais-moi la grâce, ô sulfureux Messire,
Par un minuit lugubrement tinté,
De voir entrer chez moi la dame en cire !
