Au bruit sempiternel du canon de sureau
Qu’un petit garçon bourre et rebourre sans trêve,
La bonne au coin du feu s’assoupit dans un rêve
Entre le chien blanchâtre et le matou noiraud.

Et la voilà qui dort, un pied sur le barreau
D’une chaise en bois blanc dont la paille se crève,
Au bruit sempiternel du canon de sureau
Qu’un petit garçon bourre et rebourre sans trêve.

Mais la bonne ouvre l’œil, car le vieux hobereau
La secoue à deux bras : — Qu’est-ce ? dit Geneviève.
— Ce que c’est ! ventrebleu ! que le diable t’enlève ! »
Hélas ! elle a laissé tout brûler un perdreau,
Au bruit sempiternel du canon de sureau.
