Je vis un gros corbeau, déployant son orgueil,
Qui jouait de la griffe et claquetait des ailes
À terre, avec un bruit de lugubres crécelles.
      Et je me dis : « C’est le grand deuil !

Un peu plus loin, je vis, m’épiant d’un coup d’œil,
Une pie occupée à s’aiguiser le bec,
Puis, allant et venant, d’un sautillement sec.
      Je me dis : « C’est le demi-deuil ! »

Enfin, d’une couleur plus pâle que les cierges,
Surgit, me sembla-t-il, le prince des hiboux.
Et je dis : « Ce deuil-là, le plus triste de tous,
      C’est le deuil pur et blanc des Vierges ! »

      
Ces trois rencontres successives,
      M’arrivant par un soir d’hiver,
      Laissaient en cet endroit désert
      Ma vue et mon âme pensives,

      Lorsqu’à petits vols grelottants,
M’apparut un pinson cherchant sa nourriture :
Et, joyeux, je songeai que, bientôt, le printemps
      Ressusciterait la nature.
