On venait de sortir de l’église ; ici, là,
Les hommes se groupaient, lents, les mains dans les poches ;
Entrant au cimetière, aux derniers sons des cloches,
Les femmes rabattaient leur grand capuchon plat.

Deux vieuxlarge chapeau, veste courte, air propret,
Rasés, cravate énorme et noueusement mise
D’où montaient les pointus d’un haut col de chemise, —
Du même pas tranquille allaient au cabaret...

      Quand l’un fit d’un ton assuré :
      « Il a ben prêché not’ curé
      À c’ matin, après sa lecture. »

      L’autre dit : « Quoi d’étonnant !
      Avec son métier d’feignant
      C’est si poussé d’nourriture !
