Argile toujours vierge, inburinable airain,
Magicien masqué plus tyran que la femme,
Art ! Terrible envoûteur qui martyrise l’âme,
Railleur mystérieux de l’esprit pèlerin !

Il n’est pas de poète insoumis à ton frein :
Et tous ceux dont la gloire ici-bas te proclame
Savent que ton autel épuisera leur flamme
Et qu’ils récolteront ton mépris souverain.

Rageuse inquiétude et patience blême
Usent leurs ongles d’or à fouiller ton problème ;
L’homme évoque pourtant ton mirage moqueur ;

Longuement il te cherche et te poursuit sans trêve,
Abîme où s’engloutit la tendresse du cœur,
Zénith où cogne en vain l’avidité du rêve !
