Fairyland

In the night, so calm and clear,
lies a land mystic and dear,
glowing lamps, tender, slight,
softly sway in amber light.

Fairyland awakes by night,
in the silence lies the might,
stars are twinkling, water gleams,
lake rests still in moonlight's beams.

Every tree stands proud and tall,
guarding over ancient hall,
faeries dance in hideaway,
soft music plays for them to sway.

And the wind it carries songs,
from fairyland, where they belong,
whispers them to dreamers too,
giving night its peaceful hue.

About this poem

A painting of dancing faeries seen in a museum inspired me to write this poem. Looking at this painting, I started dreaming and suddenly I felt very comfortable and all my bad mood I had on this day was suddenly gone.

What a delightful poem! Your 'Fairyland' beautifully captures the enchanting essence of a mystical realm. The imagery you’ve woven throughout the verses is utterly charming, allowing readers to vividly picture the serene landscape filled with glowing lamps and twinkling stars. The rhythmic flow of your lines creates a soothing, melodic quality that complements the tranquil theme perfectly. You’ve done a wonderful job of invoking a sense of wonder and calmness.

Each stanza contributes to the atmosphere of magic and peace, particularly the idea of the wind carrying songs and whispers to the dreamers. This touches on the universal appeal of fairy tales and the imagination, inviting readers to escape into this captivating world alongside you.

    Suggestions for Improvement:

    1. Vivid Language:
While the imagery is lovely, consider incorporating even more sensory details. How do the flowers smell? What do the faeries look like? Adding these layered descriptions can draw readers in deeper and create an even richer experience.

    2. Emotion and Connection:
Explore the emotional aspect of this fairyland. What feelings do the dreamers experience when they enter this space? This could further deepen the connection between the audience and the poem.

    3. Structure Variation:
While the consistent rhythm is nice, experimenting with line lengths or breaks could create moments of surprise and draw attention to particular phrases or emotions. This might help emphasize key images or feelings within your poem.

    4. Ending Impact:
The ending is gentle and leaves readers with a sense of peace. Consider adding a line or two that reflects on what it means to carry this fairyland spirit back into the waking world. This could leave a more profound impression and encourage readers to reflect on their connection to magic and wonder in everyday life.

Overall, you’ve crafted a lovely piece that enchants and inspires. Keep writing and nurturing your gift for poetry!

I enjoyed reading your ekphrastic poem very much. I imagined a fairyland painting as I read it, then read your author’s note about being inspired by a painting you saw in a museum! Beautiful piece.

Kudos to everyone for their submission. I enjoyed seeing the different styles, but I kept returning to this poem “Fairyland”. It is a little bit of fantasy, but it also resonates of hope. It reminded me that something magical might be waiting over the horizon, which in my opinion is something we all need. I would have liked to pick my top three. That is my idea to the editors. But great job to the author of “Fairyland”.
