Buffon’s Beauty

Buffon’s Beauty

Emerald rainbow
       upon ruby sunset

                          f l y i n g

            f l o a t

from leafy crown to leafy crown

Expansive and elegant,
        —she demands attention

Less of her,
        —elusion

Like sweet zapote,
         she is savored

About this poem

Like the majestic macaw, so much of life’s beauty is elusive. When you have the good fortune to have it in your sight, savor it —for it is fleeting, and may never come your way again.

Susan Mayer Brumel

A few years ago, I retired from a thirty-five year career in hospice counseling, at which time I began writing poetry. My poems are influenced by my patients’ journeys, the compelling beauty of nature, and the human condition. A lover of all animals and most people, I enjoy spending time in nature, long walks, and reading Pablo Neruda, Blake, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Leonard Cohen, and more. Baudelaire tells us to ‘be drunk’ on something every day; I am drunk on poetry and intend never to be sober! more…

The opening lines, "Emerald rainbow / upon ruby sunset," immediately transport the reader to a world of vivid color and natural splendor. The synesthetic blend of "emerald" and "ruby" creates a rich, almost tactile experience, setting the stage for the coming visual feast.

When I read, Buffon's Beauty, instantly I thought about those people, or animals who attempt to cling to their final moments of live as God is calling them home. The final moments are fleeting and eluding them as they begin their final breathe. Amazing poem.

There is a riddle in this poem, at least, I was riddled. But it is beautiful so I spent time puzzling. The emerald, and the zapote, treasured clues that lead me to Buffon's identity, and it's not in the old English, "buffoon". Then in my imagination I could see the "floating, soaring from crown to crown" pardon my paraphrase, it's only for brevity. A lovely mental picture. Thanks.

Thank you for puzzling over it! Here’s some clarification for you…
The Buffon, or Great Green Macaw is so beautiful. It looks like it’s floating through the sky when it flies over jungle canopies. The Emerald Rainbow is mentioned in the Bible as a symbol for eternal life. As the Buffon is on the endangered species list I thought it befitting to liken it to the Emerald Rainbow, as a symbol of its survival. The Buffon is elusive, so when one does see it, the experience should be savored, like the sweet, creamy flavor of the tropical fruit, the zapote. I hope this helps. :-)

I began my puzzling by looking up "buffon" and Bing gave me a reference to buffoon, which I knew couldn't be right. I read your authors notes and combined Maccaw with green and viola, Buffon's Maccaw. The rest was easy and beautiful, but I didn't want to spoil it for anyone else who hadn't had a chance to think it over. A nice poem.

Wow what a masterpiece penned down in your ink , marvelous life experience and instructive phenomena reflected in thine lucid lines quite applicable in our life. Right whatever lost lost for ever.So we must try to accumulate pleasure and pleasant moment when we have the opportunity in life as good time remains for short time. Yea multicolored rainbow and ruby sunset good natural imageries and contrast and contradiction. Tempting rain with Ruby sunset indicates temporary landscape. The simile in the line like sweet zapote, she is savored very instructive lines that we should taste maximum ripen fruits in the stipulated time as we will not get the chance again. Right time and tides Wait for no man. Good time fleets speedily.
I admire thine innovative style of composition in only seven lines replete with ornamented devices and life philosophy. Congratulations Ma'am and waiting for more such beautiful gems of poetry from thine magic art .
