Pâles esprits, et vous ombres poudreuses,
Qui jouissant de la clarté du jour
Fîtes sortir cet orgueilleux séjour,
Dont nous voyons les reliques cendreuses :

Dites, esprits (ainsi les ténébreuses
Rives de Styx non passable au retour,
Vous enlaçant d'un trois fois triple tout,
N'enferment point vos images ombreuses),

Dites-moi donc (car quelqu'une de vous
Possible encor se cache ici dessous)
Ne sentez-vous augmenter votre peine,

Quand quelquefois de ces coteaux romains
Vous contemplez l'ouvrage de vos mains
N'être plus rien qu'une poudreuse plaine ?
