On donne les degrés au savant écolier,
On donne les états à l'homme de justice,
On donne au courtisan le riche bénéfice
Et au bon capitaine on donne le collier :

On donne le butin au brave aventurier,
On donne à l'officier les droits de son office,
On donne au serviteur le gain de son service,
Et au docte poète on donne le laurier.

Pourquoi donc fais-tu tant lamenter Calliope
Du peu de bien qu'on fait à sa gentille troppe ?
Il faut, Jodelle, il faut autre labeur choisir

Que celui de la Muse, à qui veut qu'on l'avance
Car quel loyer veux-tu avoir de ton plaisir,
Puisque le plaisir même en est la récompense ?
