Maraud, qui n'es maraud que de nom seulement,
Qui dit que tu es sage, il dit la vérité :
Mais qui dit que le soin d'éviter pauvreté
Te ronge le cerveau, ta face le dément.

Celui vraiment est riche et vit heureusement
Qui, s'éloignant de l'une et l'autre extrémité,
Prescrit à ses désirs un terme limité :
Car la vraye richesse est le contentement.

Sus donc, mon cher Maraud, pendant que notre maître,
Que pour le bien public la nature a fait naître,
Se tourmente l'esprit des affaires d'autrui,

Va devant à la vigne apprêter la salade :
Que sait-on qui demain sera mort ou malade ?
Celui vit seulement, lequel vit aujourd'hui.
