Je vis un fier torrent, dont les flots écumeux
Rongeaient les fondements d'une vieille ruine :
Je le vis tout couvert d'une obscure bruine,
Qui s'élevait par l'air en tourbillons fumeux :
Dont se formait un corps à sept chefs merveilleux,
Qui villes et châteaux couvait sous sa poitrine,
Et semblait dévorer d'une égale rapine
Les plus doux animaux et les plus orgueilleux.
J'étais émerveillé de voir ce monstre énorme
Changer en cent façons son effroyable forme,
Lorsque je vis sortir d'un antre scythien
Ce vent impétueux, qui souffle la froidure,
Dissiper ces nuaux, et en si peu que rien
S'évanouir par l'air cette horrible figure.
