Tired As Time

Tired As Time

Tired as time in worn out shoes
Trying to shed fatigue
At the end of a long week
Endless demands from every direction
With goal posts that keep
Moving away from me
And a shrinking pocket book
So little to spare.

I’m so exhausted my breath aches
Feet hurt from so much walking
Around in circles, spinning in place
Soreness is a daily dull pain
A set of muscles I never knew I had
Feels like ill fitting clothes
Dragging me around instead.

Numbers count digital spaces here
Why oh why must I do
Something so hard to earn
Money going from my hand to theirs?
Must life be a sorry set
Labor for someone’s profit
I would rather laugh and love all day
Instead I am wiped out for nothing.

Sleep seems so easy for the shabby
A tortured body drip dries slowly
The dirt of the day lingers
And the sweat traces in tears
My body sinks like a stone
Depressing my bed in gravity
So heavy even a cheerful atmosphere
Weeps like a forgotten orphan.

Your poem is as captivating as Neruda’s Walking Around. His influence is apparent, but your words, your own. Your line, ‘I’m so exhausted my breath aches’ will stay with me forever! Great work. :-)

Your poem beautifully captures the weight of exhaustion in both body and soul. The imagery is vivid especially the lines about sinking like a stone and the soreness of unknown muscles. It speaks to a universal struggle, making the reader feel seen and understood. Despite the heaviness, there’s an undeniable strength in these words. Thank you for expressing what so many experience but struggle to articulate.

wow I couldn’t have expressed it better myself! Yeah I really felt a hour well spent articulating the reality so many of us feel-the futility and diminishing physical and emotional fatigue we all feel. Only Pablo Neruda, my poetic father said it better in his poem “Walking Around.”

Neruda’s ‘Walking Around’ is such a powerful piece, capturing the raw essence of human fatigue and emotional exhaustion so beautifully. It's incredible how poetry can express the things we all feel but can’t always put into words. I appreciate you sharing that
