The Motel In My Mind

Time and circumstance conspire,
the decades slip on by,
who you and me both were dissolved,
I think, consider why

the fire that burned inside of us,
the smoke that proved us blind,
has left me stranded, wandering,
the motel in my mind.

Living one day at a time,
scrimping, making do,
drained away the joy we’d found
in passions young and new,

and all the promises we made
to stop us proving blind,
have left me stranded, wandering,
the motel in my mind.

It’s hard to contemplate the truth
that lives do drift apart,
the facts of what was said and done
in matters of the heart.

But when I look into your eyes,
no chance of proving blind,
I lock the door, keep wandering,
the motel in my mind.

About this poem

A meditation in iambic 4s and 3s, a b c b rhyme scheme on the toll time can take on a relationship—if you let it. It takes goodwill and some imagination to keep the fires stoked.
