The Storm in My Mind

The Storm in My Mind

In school, they said, "Just sit and learn,"
But my mind would twist, my thoughts would turn.
The clock hands moved like melting wax,
While I chased dreams and lost the facts.

The teacher’s words were clouds and smoke,
I'd grasp at them, but then they’d float.
The whispers, tapping, lights too bright—
A battle raged inside my sight.

Then came the jobs, the bills, the grind,
A world that didn’t match my mind.
Alarms would scream, I'd hit repeat,
Then wake to failure on repeat.

Deadlines blurred and slipped away,
While focus fled and left dismay.
I’d try so hard, I'd burn inside,
But tasks just piled and hope would slide.

Intrusive thoughts, they claw and creep,
Like thieves that steal my chance for sleep.
A loop of doubt, a reel of shame,
A mind that calls me by my name.

The keys? Misplaced. The plans? A mess.
A simple task turns to distress.
A spark ignites, my heart takes flight,
But just as fast, it's lost to night.

Yet still, I rise, I try once more,
A soul that’s bruised, but not yet torn.
For in this storm, I dance, I fight,
A restless heart still chasing light.

About this poem

This poem is about ADHD and how it's affected my life over the years. Its very hard to describe neurodivergance to those who don't have it so I have penned this poem to try and explain.

In school, my parents would receive notes on my report card, that I had trouble handling major concepts. The teachers didn't know, I just, wasn't paying attention!!! I was wrapped up daydreaming all the time!

Maybe they'd get a kick out of some of my poetry now, I absorbed much more than some of them ever knew, but those who know me well enough, knew!

They do say neurodivergent people are more creative smart than school smart. My report cards all said the same lol, with a bit of "Sharon never stops talking" thrown in there also lol

I just want to be able to speak my mind in an environment that's supportive, not everyone is going to like my style, and I'm willing to make adjustments, and I know damn well I'm not perfect.
