A Single Step

Time moves on without an end
Anxiety’s creeping in because all I really am is dust in the wind
Reality’s not making sense
We walk this earth like we’re all that is
Absurdism, now that’s a hint
But it doesn’t give meaning to why I am
So someone please explain to me what life really is
Because if it’s what I make it then why do I feel so much dissonance
Between the chaos and confusion
At last, I feel I have me a choice
And on my shoulders must I hoist
To leave the world behind or embrace a worldly life
Neither a choice I want to choose
So a choice for fools is what I’ll do
I’ll ebb and I’ll flow with a combo of them both
Fluctuating tendencies give rise to my uncertainties
As I stare at that line which I’ve already walked a thousand times in my mind
But I have yet to take the first step
The fear of the unknown rattles me all the way to my bones
What if it goes wrong
What if this wasn’t the right choice
What if I’m left… all alone

About this poem

This poem is about the complexity of life’s journey. It can be frightening to put yourself out into the unknown when you know the choices you make can change the route of your path. But a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Cuts to the heart of the human condition. You think large, what if that turned all the way in? Inspiration comes from all ways and goes further, still. Greatly thought provoking, this one.

The uncertainty in this piece feels so real and relatable. The way it wrestles with meaning, choice, and fear of the unknown makes it deeply thought-provoking. I love how the rhythm mirrors the push and pull of doubt and determination. A powerful reflection on life’s journey!

    The fear of the unknown....

No one knows but trying is best indeed.
