To Katherine Mansfield

‘When I first met you’

When I first met you,
You were words.
A violet cover protected them,
Words cherished
Words chosen to fit your characters.
When I first met you,
You were the musicality of your language
And the colours emerging between the lines.
Then I came across your eyes
Portrayed by Lady Ottoline
You were there on a deck chair
Your illness was in your gaze
Your strength was in your love for writing.
