FREEDOM

I keep looking at my phone
Wondering what you’re doing tonight
When will you text or come home?
This so-called freedom is eating me alive

I now believe that prayers don’t matter
And promises kept aren’t meant to be
I’ve finished making heartfelt deals
The devil reigns for all to see

That highway ahead is crowded by those near me
Understandably, I’m an infectious disease with no cure
Once I met her, I was poisoned, and it keeps getting worse
No matter what I’ve done, she is with me at every turn

Who would know the truth of how I’m doing today?
Why would I go through this again?
You’ve moved on with love in your eyes
To save you, I live with tears in mine

I think I’ll find happiness when all is done
I pray I’ve done enough for heaven….
He knows what is deep in my heart
Maybe He can make my heart stop aching

Until then a few shots from a bottle of jack
And I still can’t get you off my mind
The hurt is just sad and a reminder that I’m alive
And painfully dying which is taking its time

These words in this order will make no sense to anyone
I’m guilty and I’m doing 35 to life
I do know that when my time is up
She will no longer be on my mind

About this poem

This was a complicated one. I had written several incomplete lines over a few years. They went nowhere until I combined them. Then, it flowed with emotions of a failed marriage.

For me reading that was heartfelt; I can relate to your feelings. You intuitively brought out what you were thinking deeply. That functioning helps me to process angst in a positive way, as long as my motive is positive.

I can feel pain and angst in your words. Powerful lines that you’ve blended together very well, Dave.

This poem is a raw and honest portrayal of the pain and lingering effects of a failed marriage. The emotions you express are very powerful and relatable.
