Togetherpain

is bearable
even over a child whose life began
with its end
One being, human briefly, who through us
came then ceased to be we
were three then two again
and mystery

Togetherloss
A Lamaze in loss
deep grieving
grieve in grieve out
I was the Why to
your Why
the blank stare
returning yours
the slamming door to
your folded arms

But apart
We’d lose us, too
So we emptied together
Our heads curled yin and yang
Your tears ran
down my face
Your long hair
draped across my neck
We were two faces of
The (same) Scream
Two clocks Melting down
the hospital nightstand
Stunned and silent
With all advances offering no answers
we rocked and ached
the same as humans I imagined had
long ago, holding a loved and dead one,
Together.

About this poem

This poem is about our son who was born very sick and only lived a few weeks. I wanted to express how a strong relationship can withstand such a loss and even grow stronger in it. My wife and I are lucky to have that kind of bond.
