Connection

I want to dive,
swim—
in the wet, warm darkness
of the light emanating
from the iris of your eyes.

To be imprinted in the retina,
expanding the pupils
to black hole proportions,
its gravity sucking me
into the universe of your mind.

To witness what it’s like
to experience life
beneath these skies—
through the eclipse
of your sight.

About this poem

This poem came from a place of deep longing to connect—not just on the surface, but at a level so profound it feels like stepping into someone else’s universe. I’ve always been fascinated by how much we can see in another person’s eyes: light, darkness, warmth, and the infinite complexity of their mind. Writing this was my way of capturing that awe, that pull, and the transformative power of truly seeing someone— understanding them.

I close my eyes and I can see the imprint on the retina. The connection to real life cues is wonderful, and proof simplistic need not mean simple. Well done

This is a stunning poem, Luciana. I have felt that way myself. What a beautiful way to express that aching longing to experience someone so deeply, and hoping to be seen by them in return.
The eyes are not only the windows to a person’s soul, but as you describe them —to their whole universe.

The lines "To witness what it’s like / To experience life beneath these skies / Through the eclipse of your sight" really resonated with me. They express a profound desire for empathy and understanding.
