River of Dreams

River of Dreams
2

                River of Dreams

                     There’s a river
                of dreams
              that flows
                through
                     my heart,
                        with you
                           in a little boat ~
                        I’m not sure
                      where
                    the river starts
                       or where
                         my dreams
                      may float ~
                  I only know
                 the river
                    is wide,
                         its color
                            cerulean blue ~
                          And you seem
                        to be
                           enjoying
                              the ride,
                                in your boat
                              so shiny
                          and new

Susan Mayer Brumel

A few years ago, I retired from a thirty-five year career in hospice counseling, at which time I began writing poetry. My poems are influenced by my patients’ journeys, the compelling beauty of nature, and the human condition. A lover of all animals and most people, I enjoy spending time in nature, long walks, and reading Pablo Neruda, Blake, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Leonard Cohen, and more. Baudelaire tells us to ‘be drunk’ on something every day; I am drunk on poetry and intend never to be sober! more…

I absolutely love how the layout of the poem - its cascading lines and uneven spacing- visually resembles the flow of a river, enhancing the poem’s imagery!

Sue, this is a poem of mindfulness. Your poem flows so gracefully outwardly, even as it causes us to turn inwardly towards our souls, our own childhood memories, our loved ones; and the present moment itself. The layout on the page is curvaceously also quite playfully delightful, quite charming, inviting us readers to seize the moment and mindfully flow in harmony like the river. Lovely imagery!

As a younger generation than myself might have express it: OMG!

This poem of yours takes it up a level ... not only does it look aesthetically pleasing, but its theme is intrinsically mirrored in the very shape of the poem itself. AND the fact that you embedded a rhyme-scheme within it is just ... wow.

Susan, I absolutely loved the imagery in your poem "River of Dreams." The way you describe the river flowing through your heart, with its cerulean blue color, truly paints a vivid picture. It's clear you have a beautiful way with words. Thank you for sharing such a lovely piece of poetry.

This one is as visually pleasing and soothing as it is mindfully. Dare I say this is one of the prettiest poems I've ever read, Miss Brumel.

Such a sweet thing for you to say, Randy. Maybe I should take another look at that river to see what else is floating by. Thank you, my friend.
