Epic of Tribes: Spirit's Path:Red Cloud
Beyond the rivers where tears did flow,
The plains bore witness to another foe.
From mountain shadows and vast skies wide,
A warrior's spirit and wisdom would collide.
The Lakota stood, their voices raised,
Against the tide where treaties were betrayed.
From the rolling hills where the buffalo roam,
Red Cloud stood to defend his home.
Born where the earth meets the endless sky,
A leader of the Lakota, with vision high.
As white settlers pushed, the borders grew thin,
Their promises fragile, breaking within.
He saw the Powder River, sacred and wide,
Threatened by trails where invaders would stride.
Through fire and battle, Red Cloud rose,
A tactician's mind to outwit his foes.
"Our lands are our spirit, our blood, our breath,
We’ll fight to the end, even unto death."
In the war that bore his name, he prevailed,
The forts abandoned, his strategy unveiled.
At Fort Laramie, a treaty was signed,
Yet its promises, like rivers, would unwind.
"I have seen the lies on their paper thin,
They carve the earth and let greed begin.
But I’ll not let the Black Hills fall,
This sacred ground belongs to us all."
From treaties signed to battles fought,
His wisdom and strength could not be bought.
Yet promises faded, their words turned to dust,
And Red Cloud watched as they betrayed his trust.
"The Great Father speaks with a forked tongue," he'd say,
"He takes the land and leads us astray."
Though peace was sought, the price ran deep,
The Black Hills stolen while the Lakota weep.
In twilight years, he turned to the youth,
Teaching resilience, the power of truth.
"Guard the stories, remember the past,
For the spirit of the Lakota must always last."
Though his spear rested, his voice still rang,
In the councils of elders, where wisdom sang.
A chief of strategy, honor, and pride,
Red Cloud’s legacy, Lakota's pride.
