Immersion of Fall

May M. R. Golla 2004 (Pennsylvania)

I can see the whisper of flying jewels tongues
As they drink up the nectar prepared for them daily
The fluttering of their wings
As they swarm and surround me
Drawn to the fairy ring of feeders
Framing my stone garden chair.

The clouds thunderous activity
Bringing soft air and a fall breeze
To the trees who have begun their death march
And the wild dogs who have begun their huntings
Through the damp soil of last night's rain
My bare feet are left grimy and chilled
But the soft clover patches growing between my toes
Have trapped me here to soak.

The blurring pulse of the ticking cicadas
And the humm and the trill of the birds
Leaves me dizzy, eyes closed to the surrounding green
Somehow swept up with the falling leaves
Until the bang of a sightless bird hitting a tree
Reopens my mind and he lands by me
Questioning my presence
Before fluttering away
Interrupted by distant mowing.
