In the Doldrums of Sports

Bill Flatley 1972 (Minnesota)

In summer’s stillness, time does crawl,
Empty arenas and stadiums, no cheers at all.
With NHL and NFL on pause,
Trapped in sports abyss, no grand applause.

Caitlin Clark’s brilliance does bring light,
As does MLB when a dugout-clearing fight.
But still, the heart yearns for the clash,
Of sticks and pucks and helmets abash.

A summer of rain and skies so gray,
We yearn for training camp's sunny day.
For soon the fields and rinks will roar,
And we'll all find joy in sports once more.

About this poem

This poem expresses how I feel every year at this time when we have no NFL or NHL.
