Dreamscape on in a mind switched off
Along the pavement lampposts scoff
The lazy black river of tarmac lain
In a cat’s eye blood, a reflected stain
And in the distance a white snake comes
A thousand eyes the darkness shuns
Deflected by the merciless breed
Of sleeping policemen devoid of speed
The traffic lights struggle from red to green
They have all the time there has ever been
And the Catholic rhythm of wiper blades
Are the metronome cousins of wet wage slaves
The clock melts minutes to hours and days
A tight-lipped meter maid confidence slays
In the rain they board a bus long gone
The spaced-out travellers await the white swan
Traffic cops measure out written down lies
Velocity the square of light cut to size
Round and black no tyres let squeal
Pedestrians cross in a tangent reel
Walk, don’t walk, the choice not yours
Hard falls the rain in deafening applause
Tread mill to rat run no time to pause
Flogging the amphetamine of the willing horse
