There Was

Three “Rest Houses”
Brandon Shimoda
"I stayed long in the shadow of the dead"

----------------------------------

there once  was a terrible
tree that a village decided

they should chop down
because of its  eyesore-

ness that grew and grew
and grew and grew...  but

when some came out
and volunteered to the task

they forgot one thing
and so they themselves fell

down and now an eyesore
on the side of the road

they stand there always
limbs waving in the breeze

and all who pass by
from other distant towns

shake their heads and say,
"what is wrong with them?"
