The Poet and the Painter

Courtnie Mckern 1976 (Council Bluffs, Iowa)

May 24

The poet starts out with a blank sheet of paper,
The painter a canvas as white as snow.
Each striving for a form of perfection,
That only a true artist would know.

The poet’s weapon of choice is a pen,
The painter a magical brush.
Each constructing their own masterpiece,
Having no set deadline to rush.

A poet paints a picture with words,
A painter writes a story with color.
Each spinning an enchanting tale,
Often parallel to the other.

The poet excavates from the depths of their soul,
The painter an emotional fire.
Each expressing their own uniqueness,
Driven by passion and desire.

The poet exposes life’s ugly truth,
The painter what life has to bring.
Each inducing an emotional spark,
Hoping to make your heart sing.

So whether it be Shakespeare,
Or a beautiful Monet.
Cherish all the world has to offer,
Each and every day!

I am brand new to this poets club, and this is my first comment. I have only read a few poems from various authors, and didn't want to leave a comment because I was very surprised at the quality. But this poem is the first one that I feel has serious depth and understanding of the subject matter. I feel it is well written, and enjoyed it. I guess after writing poetry for over 60 years, my standards are high. Keep up the good work Courtnie. Jerry

thank you very much for your feedback! I’ve been writing since I was little and my sister is a painter. We hope to one day publish a children’s book together which gave me the idea for my poem. I’m really happy u enjoyed it

I think it depicts a fascinating parallel between that of a painter and a poet. Well written.
