Whatever It Takes
Friends send texts with hidden knowledge because they know you’re stressed out about college
Friends ask to hang out because they know you have some doubt
They see the marks on your forearms, they know how to see you through the storms
A bond that has always been there since the day that you did swear
Never to leave and never to forget to tell each other that it’s not over yet
And the real ones never let go, they hold onto you when you fall below
I’ve seen the sacrifice
Of those who wouldn’t think twice
Take a bullet to the chest
Lose every night of possible rest
Pick up the phone the moment it vibrates
Hold you when it’s too much to take
Send songs and verses to inspire hope, the ones who’ll give you their only coat when you feel cold
Who would sneak out at night, just to show you a sliver of light
Pray and reach out, tell you it’s okay to have doubts
Who will call you when you say you need to talk, take you out at night so you can go for a walk
Break down doors, give up their kidney to be your cure
Drag you out of unsafe places, crawl through any spaces
The only ones allowed to get through the ‘do not disturb’ because that’s how much they mean to you
Go shopping when you need to get out of the house, drive around town to help you figure it out
Endure the names thrown their way, text to see how you are every day
Push through the insults, just to consult
Tell you that you are loved when you break down, search through the woods until you are found
This is what best friends do, they hold on when they know it’s all through
The ones who beg you to leave because they see the damage you can’t believe
Who say they love you and wave goodbye and as they turn, they hide the tears in their eyes
When you are blinded by the pain
And can’t see that things won’t be the same
They hold your hand one last time, they love you when you aren’t fine
What to do, they hate to know
So they soften the blow
They take their shot at your side and die from the internal bleeding inside
Because your wounds are visible, but their wounds are inexplicable
Like Romeo and Juliet, they’ll take the poison that causes your death
They’ll die for you to live, even if they don’t think you’ll ever forgive
They hang their head in shame as you cry out and they hold back despite their every urge because they’re devout
They love you forever still even though it’s the end, even if you are no longer best friends
About this poem
(Some lines are formatted differently to show the importance of them, so that they pop). A poem about the things friends do for each other. A poem to show that friends would do anything for each other. That is the bond of love. (The original title was going to be ‘Bonds Unbreakable’).
