Ils dorment dans l’armure et couchés sur le dos,
Leurs mains jointes, pourtant, ont l’air prêtes encore
A l’épée, et leurs yeux que l’ombre eut peine à clore
Goûtent sournoisement un sommeil sans repos.

Et celui-là, debout, équestre, tout en haut
Du pinacle ouvragé que son bronze décore,
Semble guetter au loin quelque tragique aurore
Que l’Adige au pont rouge annonce dans ses eaux.

La vie a si longtemps, furieuse et farouche,
Menacé par leur geste et crié par leur bouche
Que l’écho vibre encor du nom des Scaliger ;

Et, pour que de la mort ils ne reviennent plus
Fouler tes dalles, ô Vérone, il a fallu
Entourer leurs tombeaux d’une grille de fer.
