Le Temps sentencieux et le muet Amour
Se tiennent côte à côte et debout devant l’âtre,
Et l’on voit se croiser dans le miroir verdâtre
La faulx vaine du Temps et l’aile de l’Amour.

L’aile est lasse. Le Temps parfois parle à l’Amour ;
La voix douce reprend la voix acariâtre ;
L’enfant résiste et le vieillard s’opiniâtre,
Et l’enfant ne veut pas comprendre, étant l’Amour.

Rosaces au parquet et lustres au plafond,
Éclair qui va tonner, roses qui fleuriront !
Le miroir s’interroge et scrute le miroir.

Le meuble se contracte et crispe ses pieds tors ;
La porte s’entrebâille et l’on attend l’Espoir
Qui de l’aile de cendre eût fait une aile d’or.
