Le moine de Santabarem
    Vêtu de noir et ses mains pâles étendues
    Clama ' Lilith '
    Et dans la nuit blême
    Ululait une orfraie et le moine dit :
    ' Je vois Lilith qui vole poursuivie
    Par trois anges... '
    - Ici s'arrête le grimoire rongé des vers
    Et je songe à la nuit, la lune
    À son premier quartier.
    Et je songe aux Empereurs byzantins.
    J'aperçois quelque autel dans un nuage
    D'encens
    Je fleure des roses de Jéricho,
    Et je vois briller des yeux adamantins de crapauds
    Et je songe au grimoire,
    Au parchemin rongé,
    À quelque chambre noire
    Où vit retiré un alchimiste.
    Et je rêve et le jour prend teinte d'améthyste
    Et je ne sais pourquoi
    Je songe de femme à barbe et de colosse triste
    Et je frissonne d'entendre en ma chambre derrière moi
    Comme un bruissement de soie.
