In Your Garden”

“In Your Garden”

I planted my heart in your garden
and looked on as young leaves grew
At their bend and by their pardon,
fragrant flowers blossomed too

My tree stands tall; her roots lie deep
her graceful body knowing
Your fertile earth, your faithful care-
the reasons for her growing

I found a place my heart could stay
warm, loved, and protected
Where she’d flourish day by day
-and no one would suspect it

I planted my heart in your garden-
turned, and journeyed on
I knew you would take care of her
long after I was gone…

I knew she would take care of you,
grateful for your tending
Rendering sweet scent and shade,
devotion never ending

Susan Mayer Brumel

I am a retired hospice social worker, who began writing poems about 2 years ago. I am married, a mom of two sons, a Bernese Mountain Dog, and grandma of two grandchildren who are the loves of my life. A lover of all animals and most people, I enjoy spending time in nature, long walks, and reading Pablo Neruda, Blake, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Leonard Cohen, and more. Baudelaire tells us to ‘be drunk’ on something every day; I am drunk on poetry and intend never to be sober! more…
