Ice Sculpture

I am a sculpture made of Ice.
I crack and shatter, fall apart and start to melt.
So I distance myself from others,
Become cold to rebuild myself.
I look strong on the outside,
Sleek, marbley ice, like stone.
But deep inside, I’m filled with fractures,
Ready to break at the slightest stress.
The cold makes me slow and weak,
But I’m scared of the warmth, so I push it away.
Little do I know, deep inside the snow,
Something is trying to break free.
With every sunny day, and every warm smile,
I shed another layer of this icy cocoon,
Yet still I fear letting it go.
The creature has been dormant for so long,
Who knows if it’s good or bad, friend or foe.
Fear crystallizes my icy heart,
And I can only ask myself one thing:
What could be worse?
Let out the possibly terrible monster imprisoned in my ice?
Or remain the cold statue I am,
Void of happiness and warmth.

About this poem

I used to fear letting myself get comfortable. I wanted to keep to myself. I would come off rude in hopes people would leave me alone. I was an ice sculpture.
