Defeat

Adjekawen A. Jeremiah 1998 (Delta State, Nigeria)

Defeat, my defeat,
So close you've been a companion lately.
Defeat, oh defeat!
This visit has cost me the will to fight on

Injured beyond the desire for healing
I retreat head low into the cave
While the cavestone roll behind me in darkness;
I bleed and God watch.

The bats, my compassionate comrades lick my wounds
With a malicious smile at one corner of their lips
While I struggle to live.
Hear mosquitoes at daylight sing nunc dimittis in my hearing;
When did the world become so hateful!

I know not how to expell this conflict in my chest,
I only know I should spew this ale in my mouth
This mixture of sadness and anger;
But the little me says it may burn down cities
Like fire from a wounded dragon.

What is happening to me?
Why has everyone abandoned me?
I search the faces of the gods for an answer
But I find none.

Sun, why do you still shine on?
Just if I could grab you in my palms,
I'll squeeze you until you can shine no more,
That way, everywhere would be dark
And I would not have to see this deceitful world anymore.
