Oedipus The King --Another Sad Story

Oedipus The King: Another sad story:
A boy child is born, and is taken to the Oracle at Delphai to know his destiny.
The priest is scared by the destiny of the evil child, as  he predicts that the boy will kill his father and marry his mother. He therefore directs that the child be killed to avert the prophecy.
The servant  who was insructed to kill the child, instead shows him mercy, and hands him over to a childless shepherd.

Another sad story:
The boy hears the prophecy that he would kill his father and marry his mother. Thinking the shepherd and his wife to be his real parents, escapes to avert the fulfilment of the prophecy.

Another sad story:
On the way, a fight breaks out, and he eventually murders a stranger, who happens to be his real father.

Another sad story:
As he enters the city, he rescues the city from a ravaging Sphinx that killed the citizens because they could not unravel his riddle.

Another sad story:
The citizens show him appreciation and crowns him king.  He marries the widow of the late king, who happens to be his mother.

Another sad story:
The sins of Oedipus finds him out, as a plague decimates the city. Investigations reveal King Oedipus as the source of the trouble--he killed his father and married his mother.

Another sad story:
The queen, shocked by the revelation, commits suicide.
Oedipus removes his two eyes and goes into exile led by his daughter (sister) Antigone.

Another sad story:
His trouble knows no bounds as he committs suicide in exile.

"Let no man be called great till he follows his greatness down to the grave in peace."--Sophocles

About this poem

While the Greeks wrote pure tragedies, Shakespeare wrote tragi-comedies. Compare the trilogy of Sophocles in Oedipus Rex and Macbeth by William Shakespeare.
