The Peace Sign

The doaist principles symbolize a sense of unity and oneness. It signifies that one needs another person to depend on. According to Chapter 61 in Daodejing, “A great state is like the delta of a might river; it is where the whole world gathers.” This means that one can achieve a sense of oneness and unity within the earth usually when they are surrounded by others that support him or advocate on his behalf. In other words, one cannot survive within society without the presence of others that nurture or provide stability in his life. The way that the statue of the man is portrayed contradicts the doaist principles. The man’s attire of the suit makes it apparent that he is an aggressor or a dominant force. Also, the man’s juxtaposition of his stance on the steps demonstrates that he has made a mark in the world which shows that his source of power stems from his impact as a man in society. Additionally, his hand being raised makes it seem that there is no question of whether he has all the answers. This suggests that he is the head honcho or has some sort of leadership role. Furthermore, the fact that he is standing alludes to the idea that there are building blocks to achieve the status or niche that he serves in society. Moreover, the position of one foot in front of the other symbolizes that he is ahead of the pack. This proposes that he is superior or self-reliant which means that others should follow the leader. Following the lead insinuates that he sets the precedent that others should follow or abide by. This is not in sync with the doaist way of living because a man cannot stand alone. Instead, he requires the presence of a woman to make sure that there is balance. If the man had another person by his side, it would give the statue a sense of compassion and relatability. Essentially, it would illustrate that it is not just a man’s world. Adding a woman to the statue would shift the control of one person to the control as a collective unit. It would also give the effect of dependability, cooperation, and harmony. Aside from this, if the man was pictured in casual wear, it would not make him seem authoritative. As well, if he was not raising his hand, it would make him seem less powerful.
